CLEVELAND -- This is Mental Health Awareness Month.
Members of a Cleveland group called "Living Miracles" have planned their own event to educate the public about the reality of mental health issues.
Living Miracles is a peer support group. Patients dealing with schizophrenia, depression, anxiety and bi-polar disorder counsel and learn from each other's experiences.
Monday, Living Miracle Members will be at the Cleveland Zoo to show patients, families and the general public what they are all about.
They're trying to balance publicity from the Virginia Tech massacre and recent murder cases in Cleveland involving mentally ill killers.
Group advisor Amber Gibbs claims one in five of us will experience some degree of mental health problem and the mentally ill are no more violent as a group than the general population. Patient Jackie Button declared, "We're not that way. We're here to help each other. We just want to get the word out."
The Mental Health Awareness Day at the Cleveland Zoo is Monday. All Cuyahoga County residents get in free. The programs and displays will be near the main gate from 10 to 3 along with clowns, games and family friendly activities.
